Farce?! Fiasco?!2006 CCTV 英语演讲比赛

下文是我2006年看了CCTV杯演讲比赛后的观后感。

Mark Rowswell’s concluding remarks of this year’s CCTV Cup English Speaking Contest went like this: “Well, I think as you can see this English speaking competition is getting better every year, so we look forward to seeing you at the 2007 CCTV Cup.” By “getting better every year”, was he complimenting his own performance or the overall standard of the topics been argued? I have many good guesses of what he really meant for “getting better” except for the contestants’ performances.

As a lover of the art of public speaking in English myself, I have been following English Public Speaking Contest in China for quite a few years. Frankly, the general command of English the contestants demonstrated witnessed a sharp decrease over the past ten years. There were some exceptions, though, as for instance the “2005 CCTV Cup” with its first-prize winner from BFSU who manifested a convincing high level of English on stage. Yet, this year’s CCTV Cup champion’s pronunciation, diction and delivery is no good at all in comparison with his predecessors.

All my praises go to Madame Peng Wenlan, the commentator. She is a wonder! How her thoughts flow and her words resonate! I take her as my role model in the quest for mastering the English language.
