主持人 Uncle Martin 简介

W020070326467234061473

Uncle Martin (or Qiu Laoshi 邱老师) was born in Hong Kong SAR in 1952. He vowed to become a competent English user when he was only 12 years old in his last year as a primary school student.

He started devouring English (college level English books) when he started his secondary education and was exempted to write English composition in his 4th year. This was possible all because he had put in a lot of effort on his own relentlessly to make English his first working language.

As a competent user of English he assumed the role of Chief Accountant in an American magazine company when he was only 22. He reached his peak in 1985 after a 2-year stint as accountant in the personal financial service division of an Australian trust group. In his role as financial controller and a member of the board of directors, he was able to groom an operation praised as the best of the 5 offices worldwide. He moved on to another 200-hundred year old UK trading house in commodities futures as an offshore controller spanning East Africa to Japan. He spent two months in Kenya, East Africa to set up a sugar import office in the capital city of Nairobi and a bonded warehouse arrangement at the southern port of Mombassa for this UK trading house.

Subsequently he left these international operations and teamed up with an American partner to make cold calls in the US market for corporate premiums or advertising specialties business, before joining a small language centre in Hong Kong to recruit foreign teachers for universities and schools in China. It was English language education that finally triggered his curiosity to investigate the use of English in China. Towards the end of 2002, Uncle Martin finally took up residence in Shenzhen City and gradually found himself deeply involved in English language training and English corner/salon activities himself.

English as a foreign language is in principle better acquired in your high school or college days. Once these young men fresh from college join the working force, most of them will find it hard to pick up English study again when they come to realize that the future is at stake for their poor command of English and the inadequacy in business English training.

Summing up his experience from coaching these young working adults, Uncle Martin has found out the secret on how to motivate them to make a final attempt on improving their English skills good enough to compete with others in the business world. They will be taught native level English so they can interface with native speakers to give native speakers the feel that they are talking to their own people.

Note that I am not saying “teaching or teacher” but emphasizing on “coaching or coach”. These young men and women have studied too much English and grammar in their college days, and so they should actually stop learning anymore but to do the practicum. DRILLS are what they need.

I make them teach me English instead. They play the role of teachers so they have to prepare their work first before the coaching session. I insist that they Google for articles they enjoy reading. Print them out and send me a copy ahead (so I can also do my part) ready for the session.

The student has to go over the full article and try to identify vocabulary and expressions they don’t understand. If they can find the time to find out the meaning of those, great! If not at least they have gone over the article to enable them to tell me what the article is about. Why am I doing this?

I know so well that most students are with English when the coach is around for the 90 mins or 2 hours of English with the coach. When the coach says goodbye to the student, the student also kisses goodbye to English until the next session. What can you expect then?

My students tell me stories and maintain diaries or show me their office work for my review and comment. Well, there are too many other details that different techniques and approaches are used to coach students of different standards and types.

Meanwhile, putting language into use is the first step. If you never speak or write, listening and reading are simply not enough to make you an excellent user of English.

Can you tell a foreigner interviewer at a job interview that you are not quite ready to use English?

Feel free to send in your office work (after removing the sensitive information) or other writings. Uncle Martin will do his best to show you how it can be put into acceptable business English format.
