Hi there,
Thanks for this. I’ve added your site to my blogroll and I hope that this is the start of our conversations.
For your 10-minute speech, you might try listing a few facts about my blog: 1) its owner is an ELT professional (with a Master’s degree in TEFL) currently employed by the Institute of Online Education, Beijing Foreign Studies University; 2) to date, it has a sum of 822 posts covering a wide range of ELT-related issues, especially some lectures given by towering ELT figures in BFSU; 3) its owner is willing to offer FREE English learning advice to his readers.
In regard to your English study, I have the following comments to make:
1) “high-quality input = hight-quality output” is a formula that carries a lot of truth, the time and effort you invest in listening and reading English should be complemented by roughly the same amount of investment in speaking and writing — the key issues here are a) to keep a balance between your input and output; b) make sure the English material you expose yourself to is of a high standard (usually your textbooks are a credible source for appropriate language input);
2) translation as a means to language study involves highly complex cognitive processing which requires good language proficiency in both source and target languages. I suggest that you read/listen extensively in your sophomore year so as to improve your command of English before you venture any further in exploring translation techniques. This kind of preparation can only do you good instead of holding you back.
3) spend at least 30 minutes per day on intensive listening (i.e. listen for the EXACT wording of the listening material, do a dictation/transcription and study the scripts carefully).
